How to fix a permission error in Looker Studio

What to do when you don't have enough permissions to access an account or data source

If you see an error message in your charts saying that you don't have enough permissions to access an account or data source, this article will walk you through how to fix it step by step.

Step 1: Spot the error

Click on "View details" in the error message in your report.

You'll see it asks for a reconnection or that you don't have the necessary permissions to access the connected data source (like Facebook or Instagram).

Step 2: Check and edit the data source

  1. Go to Resources (in the top menu of the report).

  2. Click on Manage added data sources.

  3. Find the affected source and click on Edit.

A window will open with the current connection settings.

Step 3: Check the permissions from the external source

For example, if you’re connecting Facebook or Instagram, make sure that:

  • Your account has admin, editor, advertiser, or analyst permissions on the page or ad account.

  • The Facebook page is properly linked to an Instagram Business account, if applicable.

These permissions must be set directly in the external platform (Facebook Business Manager, for example), not in Looker Studio.

Step 4: Reconnect the account

Once you’ve confirmed the permissions:

  1. Go back to Looker Studio.

  2. On the data source edit screen, click Reconnect.

  3. Pick the right account and give all requested permissions.

  4. Click Save and close.

Step 5: Refresh your report

Reload your report page. If everything's good, the permission errors will go away and the charts should load just fine.
